Along with providing me with about 30% more opportunities to shoot
baseball pictures, as well as make some friends (and customers) I
probably would not have otherwise, the Scranton-Wilkes Barre Yankees
playing at Frontier this year meant that the stadium was finally going
to host playoff games for the first time in years!
September 8
& 9 were games 3 and 4 of the first round of the Governor's Cup
championship between the Yankees and Pawtucket Red Sox. Game 3 was
interrupted by a rain delay (during which I went home), however once the
game resumed, the Yankees managed to pull out a needed win with a 9th
inning walk-off 3-run home run. Pawtucket came into Rochester needing
only 1 win to move on to the next round. Game 4 got off on a rather
cool night. The second inning was brutal to the starting pitcher, as
the Sox scored 7 runs (including a 3-run homer). I came in just as the
Sox scored the first of those runs.
This was basically the scene during the Red Sox half of the second inning.
Yankees 2nd Baseman Corban Joseph on deck. I love shots like this; you can't get closer to the players without a media pass.
The ball was hit solid, and unfortunately caught well.
Yankees
manager Dave Miley. I had a request from a customer for some photos of
him. I had only a few, as I've mainly focused on players and action.
So, I took a seat right next to the dugout, and got very lucky with
this shot.
I just like the way this shot came out.
This was right after Miley executed a pitching change. A guy behind me just HAD to pipe up with "Oh NOW you pull him!" He had a point... 7 runs in one inning is a bit much to tolerate.
Another
shot of Miley as he headed back to the dugout after the pitching
change. Shortly after this, I had a chance to meet his wife, and she
was very kind a gracious. Seeing's how I gave her my card and directed
her here, I figured it couldn't hurt to feature her husband. ;-)
This
was a major swing. I just like how the shot turned out. My camera
much prefers day games, as I have to ratchet up the ISO to 3200 or
higher by the time a night game enters the 3rd or 4th inning.
Fortunately, even at 1/320 of a second I can still get a few action
shots.
Again... on-deck shots rock. I like this one because the player is nearly unidentifiable. I also think it's a heck of a shot.
I like that all three of these guys are all looking at the ball.
I
have about 4 shots of this swing. Which is a good thing because this
particular swing resulted in a home run. The Yanks may have been down
0-7, but they weren't going to go down without a fight. (EDIT - this was
the last run of the game, which ended 1-7 with the PawSox moving on to
the next round, and the Yankees going back to Pennsylvania).
This
was the (I think) 4th pitcher of the game for the Yankees. Like a
couple others, he was throwing heat. Due to the fact that there were
442 paid customers in the stands, when the ball hit the catcher's mitt,
it actually *sounded* painful. You could tell by hearing whether the
pitch was a fastball or off-speed.
This
was one of the last plays I stuck around for. I had moved to near 3rd
base to shoot any infield plays on that side of the field.
Unfortunately, I seem to have proved to be a ball repellent, as this
play at second was the closest I got. It was a nice play, however, as
you can tell the SS had the runner tagged way early.
For those who want, these and other pics are available. Email
me with the name of the shot(s) you want and we'll work out the
details. I hope to make ordering easier in the future, but for now this
is a one-man operation on a shoe-string. Customer satisfaction is very
important to me, and I think I can be more responsive this way (for
now).
I will miss the opportunity to shoot the Yankees
as much next year as I did this year. I am very glad I had this
opportunity this year, and will continue to try to upload more as I go
through the archives.
