Red Wings & Yankees April & May 2012

I've been lucky enough to have access to Frontier Field in Rochester, NY fairly often this year.  I always bring my camera and get at least an inning's worth of photos.

All of these are available as watermark-free hi-resolution images.  Email me for details (see contact page)

Occasionally an image is good, but blurry or otherwise not perfect... what to do?  Photoshop to the rescue!

I just love the way the three guys around the plate are in motion all at once in this next one.

The second half of April brought some serious cold and truly light attendance.  The Wings had low numbers, but the Yankees were, unfortunately abysmal.  This was odd, because based on the records, the Yanks are doing better than the Wings.  They at least have a winning record.

While I like the action shot here, check our the people in the stands... the winter coats tells you all you need to know about how cold it was... yet these hardy few were toughing it out.

A digital friend of mine said this next picture was "full of win."  Given that I really respect his photography skills, that was a huge compliment.  It's nice to have some access to the park when there aren't hundreds and thousands of people.  Practice can yield some really nice shots.

Mastroianni returning to the dugout for his glove and hat after being stranded on second.  The dirt's from stealing second in a very exciting play.

This next shot is a result of just perfect timing.  This swing resulted in a home run, and the ball you see as a blur went over the wall.  And the crowd roared...

The day after Cinco de Mayo (Seis de Mayo?) Andy Pettitte came to town on his return from retirement rehab tour of the Yankees farm system.  Many changes had to be made to accommodate this, including a complete change of venue for the game (it was supposed to be played in Batavia while the Wings played at home.)  The Wings played a Double-Header on May 5, and then came the Andy Pettitte craziness.  The stadium achieved its largest regular season attendance.  Parking sold out before the second inning was over, and the crowd was nuts.  Then, after they pulled Pettitte after the 5th, a large number of spectators (I won't call them "fans") left.

If you look at the shadows on the ground in this pic, you can see the runner was safe, but it was darned close!

Obviously, I went a bit nuts with the photography.  This was only the second game I've stayed to the end on.  I stayed because I got paid to.  The previous one was the night before when I stuck around for the post-game fireworks.

A few more.  I'm a couple weeks behind on processing game shots.  Fortunately (for this project) there are no games for either the Yanks or Wings for the majority of this week.  I should be caught up by Friday (I hope).

I was able to compose this next one, because I saw the runner take off and just started shooting... a little photoshop magic, and...

This is all the I've got so far.  More coming soon!

A few more from Mid-May.  A decent mix of Yankees and Wings here.  I've been trying to do a little less "Batter at the Plate" pictures and get some more action and other shots.
Anyway... May 11-19

Another instance of photoshop saving an imperfect shot...

A little explanation here:  First, I forgot my telephoto lens that day, so the shots are with my 18-55mm lens.  Second, the Free Tacos thing is a promotion; an opposing player is chosen as the Taco Bell K-Man.  If he strikes out during the game, everyone with a ticket stub can redeem it for a free taco at Taco Bell.  Obviously, the guy here has been stranded at 1st base by the 3rd out of the inning being a strikeout.

This one's just... good.

May 19th was a fireworks Saturday.  This means I stayed through the entire game, once my shift was over.  When you spend so many innings at a game between two evenly matched teams, interesting plays are bound to occur.  This game did not disappoint.  Given the number of pix, I didn't even include Nishioka tagging out a runner, or the last out when Parmalee went into the stands to make the last catch of the night.

As I said, I've been trying to avoid the runner at the plate pix (unless they're really compellingly good).  I was waiting for this shot, and I'm glad I got it... next time, I hope to have the exposure right (far too dark)

A rare error at first allowed the runner to be safe.  We cheered.

OK... batter at the plate, but in my defense, this was Nishioka's FIRST home run of the season.

Unfortunately, Parmalee was delcared out, because the catcher held onto the ball.  Fortunately, I got a good picture out of it.

One of those classic errors... two players may not occupy the same base.  The catcher Ramirez was declared out, but we won anyway.  Fun play to watch, though.

Fireworks pix in next post, I'm too tired to do 'em now.
