Red Wings June 2/3 (vs. Columbus Clippers)

Finally, the Red Wings have returned.  June 1 was a rain out, making June 2 a double-header.  My job, we don't leave before the second game has started, so I never get to see the first game.  Anyway, I stuck around 3 or 4 innings and got a few good shots.

For what it's worth, when I was younger, Columbus was the Yankees' farm team, so it was kind of odd this summer to watch them and know they were not future Yanks...

Our starting pitcher did not do very well.  He was doing his best, but ultimately he was pulled after the second inning.  Probably a merciful gesture on the manager's part.  Here's the starter giving it his all:

He was helped with some brilliant play by his teammates, though.  I didn't catch the catcher throwing this next one, but the series will show how early his throw was and how very very out the Columbus player was.

Lead-off batter in the 4th got on base.  Apparently he's got the fleet feet, because the pitcher kept a close eye on him.

On Columbus' next at-bat the lead-off hitter got on.  The Wings' tried their darndest, but a run was scored this inning; the first of the game.  Here Rivera, the catcher is trying to pick the runner off at first.  Was unsuccessful, but made for a good pic.

The Wings brought in a pitcher named Vazquez.  This is the first time I've seen him.  He throws some serious heat.  Check out the pitch speed indicator behind his head:

One of my favorite Red Wings, Nishioka, laid down a brilliant bunt which the 3rd baseman muffed big time.  He made up for it shortly afterward by cleanly fielding the next ball hit his way and getting Nishioka and another base-runner out in a very efficient double play.  Here's the bunt.  The muff may come later.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Due to an intense rain shower at just about the time pre-game ceremonies were to begin, the game was delayed over an hour today.  Due to this, I got to see some of the ceremonies.  I'm not a big fan of ceremony, but I got a couple good pics out of it.

This one of a little girl holding this big ol' flag, was OK, but the face she makes in this shot made the whole thing great:

During the National Anthem, I got this shot of three of the Wings infielders.  Looks almost like the cast of a Disney movie.

This next image is a combined shot.  The third out of the first half of the first inning ended with this comebacker to the mound.  The pitcher then proceeded to almost screw it up.  Parmalee's a decent first baseman, though, so all was not lost.

This last shot's one of a series of 6 or so of Nishioki stealing second.  He was the lead-off hitter today and was walked.  He had a good lead and a great start.  Very safe, but this shot was the best of them, I thought.  Notice the ball in the upper right corner of the picture.  While the second baseman didn't get him out, the Clipper did a good job of keeping the throw from going into the outfield and handing Nishioki an extra base or 2.

I left shortly afterwards.  It started raining before I even got home.  I have no idea at the moment, if they finished the game or not.

UPDATE - Turns out there were 2 more in-game rain delays before the decision was made to finish the game the next day before the next one started.
