After a week of no baseball the Red Wings returned for a series against the Durham Bulls.
The first 2 games were disappointing from a fan perspective, but resulted in some nice shots for me as a photographer.
These first 2 show Pedro Florimon's skills at shortstop.
I like this next one. Closing in on just the catcher and ump turned out a nice pic:
Last one focused on the home team. Here Rene Rivera returns to the dugout. His expression is simply a bonus.
We're
in the middle of a heat wave, and even though they play in Durham,
North Carolina, the Bulls were feeling just like the Wings.
Once
I got home and looked at the pics full size, I noticed something
interesting about the Durham pitcher Paduch. He really grimaces when
pitching.

I
tried to ramp up the depth of field for this game, which resulted in
some slower than I usually shoot at shutter speeds. Too many shots came
out blurry, so I did a bit more processing than usual for these shots.
Tuesday's
game was a blowout when I finally arrived in the 4th inning. It was
5-0. at the end of the 4th it was 6-0, and when I left in the 7th it
was 8-0. Unfortunately, it was Durham with the 8 runs.
Once
the bloodletting ended, some nice plays resulted. In this one,
Tsuyoshi Nishioka calls off the first baseman to catch a pop-up.
The
other good shots came when I got behind the net behind home for a few
shots. This first one is a nice ball-in-frame shot. Unfortunately,
this time, it was low and an actual "ball":
These
last two go together. They represent the beginning and ending of a
double play. Unfortunately, the couple shots in the middle were too
blurry to save.

The
third game in the series saw the Wings have the lead for the first time
this series. It was only 1-0 when I left, but it was 1-0 in favor of
the Red Wings! This was due to a solo homer by Dinkleman. This shot of
him microseconds away from tagging home is a nice stop-action shot:
The
next batter got a single. Apparently he's a speedy guy because the
catcher tried to catch him off first. He failed (see picture). Then the
pitcher held him close to the bag. This was successful, because when
he did eventually try to steal second he was thrown out.
The
Wings kept the Bulls from scoring with some really nice defense. The
first image is just before the runner in the frame was thrown out at
first. The second image is a 5 shot series where Brignac tries to
stretch a single into a double and failed. The Wings' effort was
spectacular!

The
21st brought a day game. I wasn't originally scheduled for the game
but I got a call to come in, and I went in. I had some other things
scheduled for the day, so when I finally got into shoot some game, I
didn't have much time. Unfortunately, when I got in, the Wings were
already down 4-0, and the pitcher kept making it worse (of course, the
Bulls had a little something to do with it, as well).
Due to the time constraints, I never did get to see any Wings bat. I left when they pulled the pitcher.
Anyway, here's the pix:
Yesterday
and today are the only times in my life I've ever seen a balk called.
Both were against Wings' pitchers, as well. I do not know what the
Bulls manager said to the umps, but they were totally ready to call a
balk on our guys. Today's balk pushed in a run (#6) Here's a pic of
the batter pointing to the violation and the ump calling it:
Before
he was pulled, the pitcher was ready for this play. Here, the first
baseman ends up making both ends of the play (stopping the ball and
tagging the base).
